Boot Camp: "0x80070005" appears when upgrading from Vista to Windows 7
Symptoms
With Boot Camp 3.1 or later, when upgrading from Microsoft Vista to Windows 7, an alert with error code "0x80070005" may appear. This can happen when the Windows 7 installer attempts to write to a read-only Macintosh volume.
Resolution
Use the Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7 Upgrade Installation Utility before upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. This utility safely unmounts the read-only Macintosh volume on Microsoft Vista.
- Download the Apple_Win7_Upgrade.zip file.
- Double-click the zip file to uncompress it.
- Double-click on Apple_Win7_Upgrade_Utility.exe to start the utility.
- When "An unidentified program wants access to your computer" appears, click Allow.
- When "Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7 Upgrade installation" appears, click OK.
- When "Preparation was successful" appears, click OK to restart your computer.
- After your computer restarts, validate that the Macintosh volume has been removed by clicking Start > Computer. The Macintosh volume should not be visible.
- Perform the upgrade installation from Microsoft Windows Vista to Windows 7.
Note: To remount the Macintosh volume while running Windows 7, insert a Mac OS X v10.6 (or later) Install DVD. Click Boot Camp Drivers, then click Repair.
